Atelier Helmi

For the beginning of a life.

Helmi

Helmi is a Finnish name for pearl, something formed slowly and kept close. It is also the Finnish word for February, that turning point of late winter when the light begins its careful return.Little children live in the February of their years, at the very beginning of their own long season, on the edge of all that is to come.

Helmi is also our daughter's name.

Where Björn began

Atelier Helmi is run by a husband and wife whose lives unfold across two cities - New York and Helsinki, traveling with six passports between us and raising our daughter across both homes. When our daughter was born, we became newly aware of how much of children's life is built around keeping them keyed up.Screens flash, toys beep, and even the "cute" things carry a certain cheerful insistence.Björn began as a reply to that, sketched on a snowy evening after our baby had fallen asleep. We imagined him as a figure from the north, born of a culture of listening. We grew up with long winters and early dark, in homes where silence was not something to correct. That steadiness has never quite left us. When Björn meets a child, the message is simple: there is time here.We created Atelier Helmi to make room for a presence that does not rush childhood, one we hope will remain long after the earliest years have passed.

From the Studio

We occasionally share new portraits and quiet notes from the studio. If you would like to receive them, you can leave your email below.

Nothing frequent. Nothing urgent.

Our design language

We use neutral palettes and typography similar to museum labels and gallery walls.Materials chosen to last beyond the nursery years.Personalization that reads as part of the artwork. Each piece is printed on museum-grade fine art paper using archival giclée methods and pigment inks intended to retain depth for generations. Not décor.
Not novelty.
Something to keep.
